House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., admitted Thursday that she had underestimated the willingness of Republicans to stand behind President Bush’s Iraq policy despite the drubbing the GOP took in the polls in 2006.“The assumption I made was that the Republicans would soon see the light,” she said.

Instead, the minority stuck to the president’s war policy in the face of unrelenting pressure from congressional Democrats and powerful lobbying campaigns by anti-war groups.
I completely forgot that Nancy was brand-new to politics.
I have to wonder, did Nancy REALLY want Republicans to see the light?
Wasn't MoveOn.org pounding conservatives "with unrelenting pressure" for them to see the light?
Didn't Nancy allow a vote to condemn MoveOn.org? Yeah, I think she did.
Why would she undermine her ally?

Nancy is doing what all powerful Democrats are always doing--trying to avoid mysterious uninvestigable small-plane crashes and trying to impress Joe Klein by catering to voters who would just as soon kill them than vote for them. Ever.

When Nancy Pelosi had her brief moment of glory, being sworn in as the first female Speaker of the House, I joked about Air Force 1 & Air Force 2 colliding that night in mid-air, leaving us with President Pelosi. "Wouldn't that be nice," I said?
Well, I, too, was dumb and easily fooled, because I believed that Nancy had some integrity, some courage, & some political chutzpah. Silly me !
Nancy is just another elitist DLC Democrat [sic] like Hillary--and just another moderate Republican in Dems rags.

No, we need Democrats with brains and spine. Democrats who understand politics in the 21st Century. The magical elf might have brains and spine but he has no idea or inclination to get anything accomplished.
While it's true that good ideas deserve to win the day, it's political acumen that actually wins. Without that, even the best ideas are dead in the water.

in my book, "weak and easily fooled" is effectively the same thing as dumb. Pelosi has been a tremendous disappointment to progressives all over the U.S., exhibiting a shocking amount of cowardice since literally the day she became Speaker.
almost makes one wonder if they aren't threatening her family, or something. i mean...something really extreme must be going on behind the scenes for her to change her stance on so many issues, so abruptly after taking the helm. she's been a completely different politician since becoming Speaker.

I agree--something significant being held over the vulnerable heads of both Pelosi and Reid would readily explain their inexplicable malfeasance as "leaders".
As Sir William of Occam might have said regarding this situation--the simplest explanation for one full year of two people's cowardly caving in and resolute cowering before our bush-league "president" may well be threats from the White House, either of exposure or of danger to a family member.
We know what the CIA/NSA/FBI are capable of, so why doubt this scenario?
